Ubisoft Return With Wii’s Red Steel 2

When the Wii was first released, it brought with it a number of exclusive titles, including Red Steel. This game was essentially a FPS in which the player could switch between gun action and sword action by using the Wii remote or nunchuk. This innovative gameplay generated much excitement throughout the gaming community and the title was one of the best selling launch titles for Nintendo's console. Developers Ubisoft have finally developed a sequel, and Wii's Red Steel 2 is due out this Spring.

Wii's Red Steel 2 is shifting the action from the Mafia orientated mob storyline of the original and relocating to a desert area, in which you control the mysterious 'Swordsman'. Seeking revenge on a range of enemies, you battle your way through various environments using the same play technique as
the original.

The controls have been fine tuned to a high degree with this title. Despite the high sales of the original, one problem that was continually cited by critics was that the controls didn't accurately transfer player movements to the screen. By using the new WiiMotion Plus, Wii's Red Steel 2 hopes to counter this problem significantly.

Also, the game takes a new graphical approach. Rather than the realistic look of the original, Wii's Red Steel 2 is done with a cell shaded look, giving the game a nicely stylised finish. Multiplayer has also been dropped from this title, as Ubisoft claim they wanted to put all their effort into making the best single player campaign possible.

The original Red Steel was something of a flawed masterpiece; it had all the potential to be a great and innovative game but was just let down by below-par controls. If Wii's Red Steel 2 can rectify this problem, then we could be seeing a truly magnificent game.

Action RPG With Wii’s Muramasa: Demon Blade

Whilst providing a vast range of exclusive games tailored for its own unique control style, the Nintendo Wii is often overlooked for its action/RPG exclusives. However, one game released at the end of 2009 took the software sales by storm and won great acclaim amongst gaming circles; Wii's Muramasa: Demon Blade.

The game follows two sword slingers as they battle their way towards their own goals. Kisuke is a young Ninja struggling to access his memories whilst searching for the ultimate blade, and Momohime, a samurai girl possessed by a foul spirit. Wii's Muramasa: Demon Blade is geared towards the unique skills each of these characters exert as master sword users.

Players can make use of three varied control techniques; the Wii remote itself, or by employing either the Gamecube controller or the classic one. Furthermore, in a neat development, players can choose whether to play Wii's Muramasa: Demon Blade as a focussed RPG, urging levelling up, or as a simpler action adventure.

Graphically, the game excels where most other Wii titles might fall behind. Drawing paralells to Square Enix's Odin Sphere, the game features a traditional Japanese art style quickly becoming popular amongst players. There's a vast range of swords for gamers to collect and forge throughout the campaign too, steeping the audience in sword lore.

Wii's Muramasa: Demon Blade is a great exclusive title which undoubtedly deserves the praise it has garnered so far. The varied play styles and impressive graphics provide a game which merits multiple playthroughs, and is a definite choice for fans of feudal Japanese culture and sword play!

A Review of the Wii MotionPlus

Not long after completing and distributing the original Wii remote and Nunchuk, Nintendo began work on the Wii MotionPlus device. Whilst the original remotes offered a breakthrough in interactive gaming technology, the company had already realised it could be refined even further. Nintendo drafted in technological company AiLive to create the optional add on.

Wii MotionPlus is used to pinpoint accuracy to a more distinct degree by implementing a dual-axis angular sensor, which reads movements and actions through both kinetic action and depth perception. Therefore, more distinct movements and mannerisms can be captured and translated by the device.

The device can be attached to the existing Wii remote using a special External Extension connector, meaning that the Wii MotionPlus can be interchanged depending on which game is being played. The feature is not compatible with every game in the back catalogue, and cannot be used in conjunction with other peripherals such as the Wii Wheel. However, for the games that do support the add-on, the difference is jaw dropping, with a degree of accuracy verging on perfection.

The number of Wii MotionPlus compatible games is steadily growing, and it's great to see the heightened potential of the Wii console being realised. The system continues to pave the way to a future of innovative gaming which breaks conventional boundaries- literally putting you into the game itself!
